Illness

If you fall ill and are unable to work, there are a few things you need to bear in mind.

I am ill, what should I do?

If you fall ill, visit a family doctor in Germany.

  • If you are insured in Germany and are travelling abroad for treatment, you will need authorisation from your German health insurance fund.
  • Continued payment of wages in the event of illness
If you have worked for an employer for more than 4 weeks, you will receive your full salary for up to 6 weeks in the event of illness. You must have a doctor's sick note for this. Since 2024, your sick note has been forwarded electronically to your employer. Ask your doctor anyway and, if in doubt, check with your employer whether the sick note has been received.
  • Sickness benefit
If you are ill for longer than 6 weeks, you are entitled to sickness benefit from your health insurance fund.
